Although she has always been seen as a glamorous Latin star, Shakira had a very modest upbringing and these shots show her as a young girl desperate to make it big. Now a very image-conscious multi-millionaire - and one of the best-selling artists of all time - the pictures might make her slightly embarrassed. In fact, some in Colombia claim she has gone to some effort to hide just how difficult her childhood was. Photographer Carlos Venegas says he met her in their hometown of Barranquilla when she was 14 and helped her on the first steps in the road to fame. He says he wanted to show how far she had come. "She was young but I could see straight away how much talent she had," he said. "I did everything I could to help her. It is sad that we are no longer in touch but she deserves everything she has. She came from nothing and was absolutely determined." She can be seen at her family's apartment when she was 14, with messy locks of dark hair and plain clothes as she mimics dance moves with a microphone and strums the guitar. She also plays with different looks in one of her first studio shoots. Two pics show her with Carlos. One at her 15th birthday party and another at the release party for her first album Magia aged 14 - with another frame showing her performing then.
